For very wide photographs

Why a panorama looks terrible posted whole
Nothing wider than about 1.91:1 gets shown in the feed. A 5:1 panorama is scaled down until its whole width fits, and what is left is a thin strip with nothing visible in it. Splitting fixes it by changing what the app is being asked to do — each slide is a normal 4:5 portrait, full height on the screen.
How many slides
A 4:5 slide is a tall, narrow window, so a wide panorama needs a fair few before each one holds anything recognisable.
| Panorama | Sensible slides | Source width |
|---|---|---|
| 2:1 | 3 | 3240 px |
| 3:1 | 4 | 4320 px |
| 4:1 | 5 | 5400 px |
| 6:1 | 8 | 8640 px |
Where to put the cuts
This is the whole craft of a panorama post. Look for natural breaks — a building edge, a tree, a change of tone — and cut there, so each slide has a shape of its own. Cutting through the middle of the one interesting thing wastes it across two slides that each show half.
- Slide 1 has to hold up alone. Its the only one guaranteed to be seen.
- Avoid cutting people. Landscape features survive a cut, faces don't.
- Fewer slides, better slides. Six slides of nothing much is worse than three that each contain something.
How to split a panorama
- Add your panorama, straight onto the mat.
- Pick the number of slides — four is a good start for most sweeps.
- Drag and zoom until the cuts land on natural breaks in the scene.
- Download and add every slide to one post, starting from slide 1.
Questions
How many slides should a panorama be?
Three to five for most photos. Work it out from the width — each 4:5 slide at 1080 px needs 1080 px of source, so a 5400 px panorama supports five slides at full quality.
Why does my panorama get shrunk?
Nothing wider than about 1.91:1 is displayed, so anything wider is scaled to fit that limit. For a real panorama that means a thin strip. Splitting into portrait slides sidesteps the limit.
Can I use my phone panorama mode directly?
Yes. A phone panorama is usually 8000 to 12000 px wide and around 2500 tall, plenty for four or five slides at full size.
Will the slides join up when someone swipes?
The content lines up, since they are cut from touching pixels. Theres still a gap between slides in the app — thats how carousels work and no tool can remove it.
